Anyone who loved a Game Boy remembers the ritual: tilting it toward a window, chasing daylight, the ghosting green blur of the original screen. The IPS mod ends that ritual. It's the single most transformative upgrade in retro gaming — and yes, it's fully available in India.
What the mod actually is
An IPS (in-plane switching) kit replaces the original passive LCD with a modern backlit panel, driven by a small adapter board that speaks the console's native video signal. The result: a bright, vivid, evenly lit screen with wide viewing angles and adjustable brightness — playable in a dark room or direct sunlight.
What changes, honestly
Brightness and colour are the obvious wins. Ghosting disappears. Battery draw rises slightly (backlights cost power — a good reason to pair the mod with a USB-C rechargeable mod). On the original DMG, the inner shell needs a small trim to fit the larger panel — invisible from outside, but a real modification; we always tell purists this upfront and return the original screen with the console.
Does it ruin originality or value?
In the collector market, a cleanly executed IPS mod on a common unit typically raises the price, because most buyers want to actually play. If your unit is rare or boxed-mint, keep it stock and buy a second player unit — we'll say exactly that if you send us photos of something we think shouldn't be touched.
Getting it done in India
